The entire theological concept, with its historical and literary references, is unravelled by middle ages historian Mrs. Marquard. The impressive images tell the story of the helps and hurdles on the way to the resurrection in the communion of saints. The pictures demonstrate how people in the middle ages grappled with the fear of hell and the hope of paradise, from the graphic representations of Christian mysteries like the virgin birth, the ascension or the holy trinity. The holy figures also reflect the middle age class system, the political situation at the time and the role of women in the church and wider world.
