Tour 2: Old creatures – young countryside Catching insects and watching birds in the lowlands.
We will be hitting the spots where our forefathers fished on the search for representatives of the most diverse type of animal on the planet – the insects: with 30,000 species in Central Europe alone. The tour beings with an informational talk at Chiemsee Aquarium near the lakeside inn in Feldwies. You will also be kitted out with butterfly nets, microscope and field guide there. There are many varieties of butterflies, grasshoppers, beetles and thousands of other creepy crawlies in the lowlands just waiting for you to catch and identify.

Tour 3: Rowing boat to the end of the lake Shallow bays, yellow cow lilies, vast reed beds
We row from the “Fisher am See” (Prien-Harras) and make our way over to the Irschener Winkel as they did in years past. This area of calm water is impassable for larger vessels. We will be armed with nets and sieves looking for small pisidiums in the mud along with handsome river snails. We will make our way past fields of yellow cow lilies and thick reed banks where pikes lurk and great reed warblers sing.

Tour 4: Geological time travelling Panning and sieving at the mouth of the Prien
Join us on a natural journey of discovery around the mouth of the River Prien. At the mouth of the Prien we will unearth the secret of the origin of the colourful pebbles, the name of the game is “sieve – polish – be amazed”. With sandpaper and polishing powder, we will get to grips with the pebbles, and washing with the gold pan we will uncover shiny precious metals. The stones then help us understand how the Alps were originally formed.

Tour 5: Waterways under the microscope- Natural history walk along the river Prien
You will discover animals who have cleverly adapted to the fast flowing waters of the Prien. You will also learn how biologists use this fact and control the water quality. On the old riverbank you can see how the power of the Prien’s water has been used for centuries. The tour also takes in the fish ladder which bypasses the weir and allows the fish access to their spawning grounds upstream.
